Understanding your bone health early can make a significant difference in preventing and managing osteoporosis. Here are five important reasons why a DXA scan might be right for you:

1. Family History of Osteoporosis or Fracture

Family history of Osteoporosis, or a hip fracture of a parent or sibling, increases one’s risk of developing the condition.

2. Significant Weight Loss

Significant weight loss, either planned or unexpected, can be associated with bone loss, and an increased risk of osteoporosis.

3. Personal History of Fractures

A personal history of broken bones, especially of the hip, back, wrist or ribs. In particular, if these bones are broken without a significant fall or injury.

4. Lifestyle Risk Factors

Smoking, high alcohol intake, or poor nutrition, are all risk factors for developing osteoporosis.

5. Use of Certain Medications

Certain drugs or medications may increase the risk of osteoporosis. These include:

  • Steroids
  • Indigestion medications
  • Drugs to control epilepsy
  • Chemotherapy or cancer treatment drugs
